Charging an EV comes down to picking one of three charging levels and, for public charging, plugging in a fairly standard connector. Most Canadian EV owners do the vast majority of their charging at home overnight and rarely think about it day to day, treating public charging as something reserved for longer trips rather than a daily routine.
The three charging levels

According to Natural Resources Canada, Level 1 and Level 2 chargers both deliver alternating current (AC) that the vehicle converts internally, while DC fast chargers deliver direct current straight to the battery, which is what makes them so much faster.
The plug itself
Almost every EV and Level 1 or Level 2 charger in Canada uses the same standard connector, called J1772, for AC charging. DC fast charging has historically used a separate CCS connector, but Canada is now in the middle of a shift toward NACS (the connector Tesla originally developed), with most major automakers adding native NACS ports or offering adapters. What a typical week actually looks like
For most owners, charging becomes routine fast: plug in at home in the evening, unplug in the morning with a full or nearly full battery, and forget about it until a longer trip requires a stop at a public fast charger along the route. It’s a meaningfully different rhythm than gas station visits, less frequent thinking about it overall, but occasionally more planning required for long-distance travel.
