How Long Does It Take to Charge an EV?

How long it takes to charge an EV depends almost entirely on which type of charger you’re using, not on the vehicle alone. The same car can take anywhere from a full day to under an hour depending on whether it’s plugged into a household outlet or a public fast charger.

Why the same charger can feel different in two different cars

Charging speed is limited by whichever is slower: the station’s maximum output, or the vehicle’s maximum acceptance rate. Plugging a car that tops out at 50 kW DC charging into a 250 kW station won’t charge any faster than 50 kW allows. This is worth checking on any EV you’re considering, since maximum charging rates vary significantly between models.

Why fast charging is quoted as 10 to 80%, not 0 to 100%

DC fast charging is quickest in the lower and middle part of the battery, then tapers off noticeably above about 80% to protect the battery. Charging from 10 to 80% might take 25 minutes, while pushing on from 80 to 100% on the same charger could take almost as long again. That’s why nearly every road trip charging strategy is built around the 10 to 80% window rather than waiting for a full charge, and why the answer to whether you should charge to 80% or 100% usually comes down to whether you’re heading out on a longer drive or just topping up at home.

What actually changes these numbers

Battery size, cold weather, and the state of charge you’re starting from all shift these figures. A larger battery takes proportionally longer at the same charging speed. Cold temperatures slow charging noticeably, sometimes by half or more, unless the battery has been preconditioned first. 💡 Tip: For daily driving, don’t think in terms of “time to full.” Think in terms of “range added overnight.” A modest Level 2 charger adding 30 to 40 km per hour comfortably covers a full night’s charging for nearly any Canadian commute.
