How this estimate is calculated
The calculator starts with your total daily driving, commute plus errands, and adds a buffer so you’re not planning around a battery that’s empty by the end of the day. The base buffer is 15 percent for battery aging over time. Mild coastal winters (Victoria, Vancouver) add another 15 percent; moderate winters (Toronto, Montreal, Halifax) add 25 percent; and severe cold (Winnipeg, Edmonton, Saskatoon, the North) adds 40 percent, since low temperatures, and the energy it takes to heat the cabin, can cut real-world EV range by 20 to 40 percent. If you charge irregularly, at public stations or an apartment charger rather than nightly at home, another 15 percent is added, since you’re less likely to start every day at a full battery. The final number is your daily driving multiplied by that combined buffer.
Why a buffer matters even with a realistic rating
NRCan’s range rating is built on a 5-cycle test that already accounts for cold weather and cabin heating, so it’s a more realistic starting point than a simple highway-cycle number. But no single test can capture the full range of Canadian winter conditions, from a mild coastal January to a deep cold snap on the Prairies or in the North, and real-world range still shifts with actual temperature, speed, terrain, and driving style.
