What is EV Preconditioning and Should I Use It?

Preconditioning is the process of warming (or cooling) an EV’s battery and cabin to their ideal operating temperature before you start driving or before you plug in to fast charge. It sounds like a minor convenience feature, but in a Canadian winter it’s one of the most effective things an owner can do, meaningfully improving cold-weather driving comfort and cutting DC fast-charging times significantly. Yes, you should be using it.

How it actually works

An EV’s battery performs best within a fairly narrow temperature band, roughly 20 to 30°C. Outside that range, both driving efficiency and charging speed suffer. Preconditioning uses the car’s heating or cooling system to bring the battery pack (and usually the cabin) into that ideal zone ahead of time, either while scheduled to leave home or automatically as you approach a fast charger. The key detail: if the car is still plugged in when preconditioning starts, the energy comes from the wall, not the battery, so you get the benefit without spending any of your range to get it.

The two situations where it matters most

A cold battery charges slowly to protect the cells, sometimes accepting only a fraction of a charger’s rated power when cold-soaked. Setting a DC fast charger as your navigation destination usually triggers automatic battery preconditioning en route, so the pack can accept meaningfully more power the moment you plug in, turning a long, slow session into a noticeably shorter one.

Should you always use it?

In mild weather, the benefit is small and not worth thinking about. In cold weather, particularly below about 5°C, and especially anytime you’re headed to a DC fast charger, it’s worth using every time. 💡 Tip: If your EV’s navigation system doesn’t automatically precondition for a fast charger, most models offer a manual battery preconditioning toggle in the app or infotainment menu. Start it 20 to 40 minutes before you plan to plug in, longer in deep cold.
