Winter is where EV ownership feels the most different from driving a gas car, and where a few simple habits make the biggest difference. None of these require special equipment or expertise, just a change in routine, and together they can meaningfully offset the range and charging effects of cold weather.

Precondition while still plugged in
Warm the cabin and battery before you unplug and drive off. Most EVs let you schedule this for a specific departure time, so the energy comes from the wall rather than the battery you’re about to drive on.

Lean on seat and steering wheel heaters
Heating a person directly uses far less energy than heating the entire cabin. If your EV has heated seats and a heated steering wheel, using those first and dialing back the cabin heat can meaningfully extend range on cold days.

Use Eco mode
Eco or efficiency modes moderate acceleration and climate output automatically. It’s an easy way to bank back some of the range that cold weather takes away, with no real change to how the car feels to drive.

Clear snow and ice before you drive
Extra snow adds weight and disrupts airflow over the body of the vehicle, both of which cost range. A quick brush-off before setting out is worth doing every time.

Keep highway speeds moderate
Dropping from 120 km/h to 100 km/h on the highway reduces aerodynamic drag noticeably, and cold air is denser to begin with, so the effect is larger in winter than in summer.

Check tire pressure regularly
Tire pressure drops with falling temperatures, and underinflated tires increase rolling resistance. Proper winter tires also matter more for safe traction on ice and snow than for range, but keeping pressure correct helps both.

Build a charging buffer into winter trips
Plan for 20 to 40% less range than the rated figure on longer winter drives, and expect DC fast charging to take somewhat longer in deep cold. A little extra planning removes most of the uncertainty around winter road trips.
💡 Tip: Parking in a garage, even an unheated one, or close to a building out of direct wind, keeps the battery a few degrees warmer overnight and can make a noticeable difference to charging speed and range the next morning.
⚠️ Note: None of this is about avoiding winter driving. EVs are tested and driven across Canada year-round, including in some of the coldest cities in the country. These habits are about getting closer to your vehicle’s best possible winter performance, not overcoming a limitation that makes winter EV driving impractical.
