How Do I Compare EV Ranges?

Comparing EV range on paper looks simple: bigger number wins. In practice, the number that matters most is efficiency, not just the total, and comparing two EVs by range alone can be misleading if their battery sizes are wildly different. Here’s how to actually compare models against each other, not just look at a single figure in isolation.

Start with efficiency, not just total range

Two EVs can post the same rated range with very different battery sizes. A vehicle with a smaller battery that achieves the same range as one with a much larger battery is simply more efficient, which usually means lower charging costs and a smaller, lighter, less expensive battery pack to begin with. Natural Resources Canada publishes both the range figure and the energy consumption rating (in kWh per 100 km) for every EV, and the consumption figure is arguably the more useful number for comparing models fairly.

💡 Tip: If two EVs have similar range but one has a noticeably smaller battery, the smaller-battery vehicle is the more efficient one, and will typically cost less to charge over the same distance. Watch for trim-level differences

Range varies meaningfully within a single model lineup. A single-motor, rear-wheel-drive trim will usually out-range an all-wheel-drive dual-motor version of the same vehicle, sometimes by 40 km or more, because the extra motor and drivetrain hardware add weight and draw more power. Larger wheel and tire packages, often bundled with higher trims, also reduce range slightly due to added rolling resistance. When you’re comparing “the range of Model X,” make sure you’re comparing the same trim and wheel size, not just the same nameplate.

Don’t compare a BEV’s range to a PHEV’s electric-only range directly

A plug-in hybrid’s electric-only range (often 30 to 80 km) serves a completely different purpose than a battery electric vehicle’s full range. A PHEV is designed to cover short trips on electricity and fall back on its gas engine for everything else, while a BEV has no such fallback. Comparing the two side by side as if they’re solving the same problem leads to an unfair comparison in either direction.

Rated range is the baseline, not the forecast

Once you’ve compared models on a fair basis, remember that your actual range will move up or down based on temperature, speed, and driving style.
