What Is the Difference Between BEV and PHEV?

Both are plug-in vehicles, but they solve a different problem. A BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) runs entirely on electricity with no gas engine at all. A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has both a battery and a gas engine, and is designed to cover short trips on electricity before switching over to gas. Neither is simply a “better” or “worse” version of the other, they’re built around different driving patterns.

Which one fits which driver

A BEV tends to suit drivers who can charge reliably at home or nearby, and whose daily driving comfortably fits within the vehicle’s range. A PHEV can be a good fit for drivers who want the option of running on electricity for daily short trips, but who take long trips often enough, or don’t yet have reliable home charging access, that having a gas engine as a fallback removes some of the planning that comes with a BEV.

💡 Tip: A PHEV only delivers its efficiency and cost benefits if you actually plug it in regularly. A PHEV that’s rarely charged behaves like a heavier, less efficient gas car for most of its driving, since it’s hauling around a battery it isn’t using.

What about regular hybrids (HEVs)?

A non-plug-in hybrid (HEV) uses a small battery charged only by the engine and regenerative braking, and can’t be plugged in at all. It improves fuel efficiency over a conventional gas car but doesn’t offer the electric-only driving or the incentive eligibility that BEVs and PHEVs do. It’s a genuinely different category, not a smaller version of a plug-in vehicle.

Don’t compare their range figures directly

A PHEV’s 30 to 80 km electric-only range and a BEV’s full rated range are answering different questions, one is “how far can I go without the gas engine kicking in,” the other is “how far can I go before I need to charge.” Comparing them side by side as if they’re solving the same problem leads to an unfair comparison in either direction. ⚠️ Note: PHEV eligibility for Canada’s federal EVAP incentive and any provincial programs depends on the vehicle meeting a minimum electric-only range requirement, not just having a plug. Check our rebates and incentives page to confirm a specific PHEV model qualifies before assuming it does.
