Bidirectional charging lets electricity flow both ways between your EV and the outside world, not just into the battery, but back out of it. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) uses your EV’s battery to power your house, useful during an outage. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) sends power from your EV back into the electrical grid itself. It’s a genuinely useful capability, but it’s still early days in Canada, and not every EV supports it.

Where Canada actually stands
According to Electric Autonomy Canada, only a handful of EVs currently offer true V2H capability, including the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Nissan Leaf, and Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform. More automakers have committed to adding it, but availability still depends heavily on the specific vehicle, model year, and compatible home hardware, not something to assume applies broadly yet.
On the grid side, the Smart Prosperity Institute reports that Canada’s first V2G pilot project ran in British Columbia at the end of 2023, where a Lion Electric school bus, connected via a 60-kilowatt charger, powered 24 single-family electrically heated homes for almost two hours. It’s a meaningful proof of concept, but consumer-facing V2G programs for personal EVs remain limited and mostly at the pilot stage across Canada.
What it takes to actually use V2H at home
Beyond owning a compatible vehicle, V2H requires specific home hardware, typically a bidirectional charger and a transfer switch, installed by a qualified electrician, along with utility approval in most cases. This is a more involved and more expensive project than a standard Level 2 charger install, closer in scope to a home backup generator system than a typical EV charging setup.
