Red Flags to Watch For When Buying a Used EV

A used EV can save you thousands over buying new, but it comes with a set of things worth checking that simply don’t apply to a used gas car. Most of it comes down to the battery, the warranty, and the vehicle’s history, and none of it is complicated once you know what to look for.

Battery-related red flags

Most EVs can generate a battery state of health reading through the manufacturer’s app, a dealer diagnostic tool, or an independent inspection. A seller who can’t or won’t provide this is worth approaching carefully.

Capacity well below 80% of original
A used EV is generally considered to be in acceptable shape at 80% of its original capacity or above. A vehicle rated at 400 km new sitting at 78% capacity has roughly 310 km of usable range left. Factor this directly into your offer.
Worth checking
Capacity loss inconsistent with age and distance driven
A five-year-old EV with 60,000 km showing only 70% capacity is worth a closer look. Typical degradation at that age and distance is usually closer to 85 to 90%. An unusual drop can point to extreme temperature exposure or a prior fault.

Warranty considerations

Most manufacturers offer a separate battery and powertrain warranty that’s longer than the rest of the vehicle’s coverage, commonly in the range of 8 years, though the exact term and distance limit vary by brand. On an older or higher-mileage used EV, that coverage may already be running low or expired, so confirm the remaining term directly with the manufacturer rather than relying on the seller’s recollection. Warranty transferability to a second owner also varies by brand and can carry conditions, particularly around aftermarket charging equipment or non-OEM parts, so get this in writing.

Charging and connector considerations

If you plan to rely on public fast charging regularly, check whether the vehicle uses the older CCS connector or the newer NACS standard, since Canada’s charging network is in the middle of that transition and CCS-only vehicles may need an adapter for some networks. Some early EVs also have very limited or no DC fast-charging capability at all, a hardware limitation that can’t be upgraded, so confirm this matters to your use case before you commit. Vehicles without active liquid thermal management (an older, air-cooled design found on some early models) are generally more prone to heat-related degradation, worth asking about regardless of climate.

Flood or salvage history Water exposure, especially salt water, can damage high-voltage systems and battery packs in ways that aren’t always obvious. Pull a vehicle history report through CARFAX Canada on any used EV you’re seriously considering.
Open recalls Check Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database, or a VIN-based tool like CARFAX Canada’s recall check, to confirm any known battery or charging system recalls have been addressed.
Fleet or rental history Frequently fast-charged and used by multiple drivers, these vehicles can still be good value if priced accordingly, but warrant extra attention to battery health.
Multiple owners in a short period A vehicle that’s changed hands two or three times in as many years may reflect an undisclosed issue, or simply a lease return cycle. Worth asking about directly.

Pricing red flags

The used EV market is reasonably transparent, and prices tend to cluster in predictable ranges by model year, distance driven, and trim. A price noticeably below comparable listings usually reflects something, a known battery issue, an undisclosed history problem, or a warranty that won’t transfer. Pressure to decide quickly, without time for a pre-purchase inspection or battery health check, is itself worth treating as a signal.
